Training for faculty and staff
In the wake of campus shootings in the past year at Virginia Tech, Louisiana Tech and Northern Illinois University, the UW Police Department (UWPD) has developed a set of training resources for faculty and staff.
Faculty and staff can play a major role in helping to respond to or avert these situations by being aware and informed. UWPD offers one-hour sessions on “avenger violence awareness,” which refers to the personality profile of those involved in recent campus shootings. Attendees learn how to identify warning signs of a person in crisis, what to do with concerns about behaviors, violence as a process and the violence continuum, phases of mass casualty shooters and what to do in the event of an active shooter incident.
Schedule and Registration
The UWPD offers avenger violence training periodically upon request.
Additional resources are available at University of Wisconsin Police Department.
